Several Oregon wineries are located east of Oregon's Cascade Mountain range;
some of these are located in the State's Columbia Gorge
Wine Country including the Columbia Gorge AVA and a portion of the
Columbia Valley AVA, where the Columbia
River cuts through the Cascades
near The Dalles, in the
Oregon portion of the Columbia Valley AVA east
Arlington on the way to Pendleton, and in
Oregon's portion of the Walla Walla Valley AVA in
the Milton-Freewater, OR area where in 2015 the Rock District AVA was
authorized. Other wineries can be found in Eastern
Oregon's
Bend area, one in Mt
Vernon, one near La Grande
and two in Echo, OR, near Pendleton... at least at this point in time (May 2018).

Southwest Idaho's Snake River Valley AVA spills over into Oregon,
including significant parts of Baker and Malheur counties.
Currently, there are no wineries and just one vineyard in the Oregon
portion of the Snake River Valley AVA.
The
climate on the east side of Oregon's Cascade Mountains is much drier and
more extreme than that to the west of the range. Even so, winters in eastern
Oregon are no less severe than the wine-growing regions of Germany and
northern France. The big-sky, high-desert setting of this region
are worthy of a visit in their own right. Skiing, wind surfing, golfing, hiking
and sightseeing draw thousands of visitors throughout the year... and a
handful of wineries is a definite bonus. |
