Distinctly Southern
Oregon
The natural beauty
and traditional agricultural practices on the
southwest-facing slopes of Southern Oregon's Roxy Ann Peak have
changed little over the past century. East of
Medford in Oregon's Rogue Valley, Hillcrest Orchard has
been operated by the Parsons family since 1908 and has
established a
well-deserved reputation for growing world-class fruit.
On these same slopes, the first plantings of
Hillcrest Vineyard began in 1997, taking
advantage of the property's shallow and ideally suited
limestone-clay soils and southern solar exposure for
growing cabernet sauvignon, malbec,
merlot, cabernet franc, grenache, tempranillo, viognier
and syrah.
Eighty-seven acres of estate vineyards are now planted
on the historic orchard lands of
Hillcrest Orchard; most are planted to cabernet
sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot, the main varietals in RoxyAnn’s claret
wine. Other
varietals now planted are reds such as malbec, petite sirah and tempranillo.
The site of the Hillcrest Vineyard is one
of the warmest in the Rogue Valley. Grapes for
RoxyAnn's white wines – pinot gris and viognier – come
from other cooler vineyards in the region, like Don and Traute Moore’s
vineyards and Pheasant Hill. Others come from the
Willamette Valley.
Hillcrest
introduced RoxyAnn Winery in 2002.
Its mission was, and is, to
produce world-class wines, while supporting the Parsons
family's commitment to preserving this land for future
generations. Both the orchard and the vineyard
honor the agricultural heritage of this land by insuring
that both are cultivated under
sustainable land
management practices. These
practices promote the natural character
of the estate which carries through in the taste of the ripe, concentrated
wines of RoxyAnn – wines that possess rich color,
complexity and concentration.
"A winemaker can't craft wines that surpass the quality
of the fruit," notes winemaker John Quinones.
"It's our
job to fully develop, preserve and showcase what comes
from the vineyard. With appropriate viticulture
practices, desired flavor profiles, balance and texture
can be developed in the vineyard, long before the grapes
are brought into the winery."
Quinones' stylistic trait in his wines is balance and texture. "I am
very focused on the texture of a wine," he explains.
"The balance of
the fruit, acidity, tannins, etc., is what creates a
wine's texture. When the balance is right, the wine is
in harmony and will simply feel good in your mouth."
Inside the
historic Hillcrest "Honor" Barn, RoxyAnn Winery and
Hillcrest Orchard welcome visitors daily with a blend of
hospitality, wine tasting and produce sales. In
fact, many say the patently friendly and informative
staff are second only to the masterful wines as the secret to RoxyAnn
Winery's success and its appeal to Rogue Valley wine tourists.
Consider bringing a picnic
to enjoy while surrounded by the beautiful RoxyAnn
gardens overlooking the vineyard and
the orchard.

One of our most popular wines. This wine is made from fruit
gathered from Oregon pioneer-era trees and carefully ripened. The
delicious fragrance of ripening pears is retained in the bouquet of
the wine and combines with a balanced residual sweetness. Great with
shortbread, nut cakes, orchard fruit-based tarts and pies. Add to
your favorite flan recipe or simply pour over ice cream. Or, simply
serve with world-famous Rogue Creamery bleu cheese.
