Idaho Wine Country
Snake River Valley Wineries,
Wine Country, Wine and
Wine
Shops
On its way
to the Columbia River and beyond to the Pacific Ocean, the great Snake River
of historic and geologic fame winds
its way across southern Idaho, then turns sharply north and continues in
that direction for a few hundred miles,
marking the border
between western Idaho and eastern Oregon.
Like so many other great rivers of wine-growing regions around the world, the Snake creates a micro climate
that bodes well for grape
growing, despite its higher elevation and arid landscape.
Not only does the river provide
irrigation water for otherwise dry lands, but the air currents it creates
from its flowing water mass
help temper the extremes of winter and summer temperatures. Is it any
wonder the majority of Idaho's wineries are scattered throughout
Idaho's Snake River Valley?
Seventeen of Idaho's 23 wineries have located in Idaho's Snake River Valley,
with 13 choosing the valley's western end. There are now four wineries
to visit in the valley's eastern portion.
Most Idaho wineries are small, and
only a few have a presence on the menus of restaurants outside the
state -- although that number is growing. Likewise, few Idaho wines
can be found on the
shelves of wine shops outside the the local area.
The
best -- and most rewarding -- way to access a wide array of Idaho's distinctive wines is to plan
a visit. Use the information provided here to create your own custom
tour of this diverse region. Explore the expanse and beauty of its
lands. Discover the flavors of various terroirs in wines produced
throughout the region. And be sure to take a few bottles home to share with
friends.
