     The Walla Walla Valley wine region is the most remote of all Washington State wine regions.  Ironically, that remoteness may be an advantage for Washington wineries located there.  Some say it has been the major contributing factor to the well-known esprit de corps of Walla Walla wineries and their vintners.  Others say Washington wineries within this arid, 530 square-mile appellation are setting theWalla Walla vineyard image by Duval standard for Northwest winemaking -- especially when it comes to Merlots, Syrahs and Cabernet Sauvignons. 

       Lying within the larger Columbia Valley AVA, the Walla Walla wine region includes land in both Washington and Oregon -- from the far southeastern corner of Washington State to the northeast tip of Oregon.

       While all but just a few Walla Walla wineries are located in Washington, vineyards grow in both states - 57% in Washington and 43% in Oregon, with the newest sub-appellation of the Walla Walla - The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater - lying entirely within Oregon.  Planted vineyard acreage in the Walla Walla AVA totaled 800 acres in 1999, 1,300 in 2011 and close to 3,000 in 2017. 
 

       The marked increase in vineyard acres between 2011 and 2017 resulted from exploration by growers and winemakers of new vineyard locations in the area.  The number of wineries and tasting rooms also has grown steadily with almost 150 wineries calling the Walla Walla Valley AVA home.  Those listed below are open to the public during some part of each year, although some ask you to call first. 

       The Walla Walla Valley's geologic past is riddled with cataclysmic events... events that contributed to today's fine grape-growing soils. 

        Enormous basaltic lava flows (dating back 15 million years) established the foundation of the Columbia Plateau (including the Walla Walla Plateau), the earth's youngest basalt plateau.  Relatively recently, beginning about 15,000 years ago, a series of 50 to 100 giant "glacier outbursts" released huge volumes of water that had dammed up behind the southern lobes of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet.  Failures of ice dams occurred every 40 to 140 years at the end of the last ice age.  These cataclysmic floods scoured the lands of eastern Washington and northern Oregon, creating channels and pot holes in the landscape where water velocities were highest.

        The "Channeled Scablands" of today's eastern Washington are the result of these phenomenal floods, documented as the largest in the geologic history of the Earth!  When flood waters retreated, ponds were left behind throughout vast areas between Missoula, Montana, and the Willamette Valley of Oregon; the Walla Walla wine country region was not spared.  In the wake of the floods, fine-grained slack-water sediments were deposited.  Geologically speaking, many an ancient catastrophe set the stage for some of the best winegrowing regions of the Northwest.
