Washington Wineries & Wine Regions

Yakima Valley, Rattlesnake Hills, Snipes Mountain
& Red Mountain wine regions
...the wineries, the wine country, the wines

Navigating the Yakima Valley & its sub appellations

Wine Shops & Wine Bars

Keep your eye on the Yakima Valley AVA and its sub appellations of Red Mountain, Rattlesnake Hills and Snipes Mountain.  Currently, more than 150 Washington wineries are located in these wine regions within Benton and Yakima counties.  If you plan a visit, be sure to allow time to wander the many back  roads of the area which is where most vineyards are located.  And during harvest season in the fall, roll down the window and breathe deep.

More than 17,000 vineyard acres are grown within the boundaries of the Yakima Valley appellation (as of 2018) with more than 40 different white and red grape varieties represented.  While the Yakima Valley is Washington's oldest AVA - authorized in 1983, the Red Mountain AVA, the Rattlesnake Hills AVA and the Snipes Mountain AVA all lie within within it.  The Yakima Valley AVA, in turn, is the largest sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley AVA (established in 1984), both in total size and wine-grape acreage.  Other sub-appellations within Washington's large Columbia Valley AVA include the Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and the Naches Heights AVAs.

Priority Wine PassTIP:  If you are making a plan to visit wine country any time soon, be sure to get The Priority Wine Pass first. Enjoy a full year VIP membership with its huge savings on tasting fees and wine purchases at hundreds of participating wineries throughout Washington, Oregon and California. In no time at all, your membership will more than pay for itself in complimentary or 2-for-1 tastings, along with other deals at premium wineries... and WinesNorthwest users receive a $20 discount on a $59.99 membership fee.

When the Yakima Valley was authorized as Washington State's first official American Viticultural Area (AVA/appellation), three east-to-west geologic folds in the earth's crust were included within its boundaries, running east from the City of Yakima  ̶  the Ahtanum Ridge, the Rattlesnake Hills and the Horse Heaven Hills.  These were the primary land masses associated with distinguishing the boundaries of this river valley carved by the Yakima River.  Since then, two of these three areas have been established as their own AVAs.

A system of canals and wells, along with the Columbia, Yakima and Snake Rivers, supplies growers in this dry river valley with ample water to carefully control irrigation of their vineyards. The availability of water has transformed the Yakima and Columbia Valleys into the largest and most productive wine regions in the Northwest.  Come visit and discover a country full of vineyards, orchards, hop yards and row crops.

and its sub-appellations

Wine Shops & Wine Bars

Wines Northwest organizes wine touring information related to the Yakima Valley AVA into two major sections -- the Upper Yakima Valley and the Lower Yakima Valley.  Within the Upper Valley lies the Rattlesnake Hills sub-appellation (click on the thumbnail map to see more detail).  The Red Mountain sub-appellation is located in the lower portion of the Yakima Valley, as is the burgeoning Prosser area.  The most recently designated AVA within the Yakima Valley appellation is  Snipes Mountain AVA which lies more or less in the central portion of the Valley between Granger and Sunnyside.

Use our mapping system to locate and explore the many wineries throughout these wine regions. Watch for links to lists of  nearby lodging, dining and touring suggestions for the corresponding areas.
