The roadside landscape leading
to the first stop in the Ribbon Ridge AVA offers
opportunities to view flood channels left in the wake of
the repetitive and cataclysmic Missoula Floods that
scoured the Willamette Valley thousands of years ago -
floods that roared through the landscape at more than 30
miles an hour with water levels hundreds of feet deep.
First Stop –
Trisaetum Winery, 18401
NE Ribbon Ridge Road, Newberg area in the Ribbon Ridge
appellation.
Surrounded by vineyards, a visit
to Trisaetum includes a a display of soil types specific
to the winery's vineyards. A guided, comparative
wine tasting will be conducted in the winery's Gallery
featuring artwork by winemaker/owner James Frey.
Inspired by the role soils play in his winemaking, James
sometimes adds vineyard soils to paints he uses to add
texture and interest to his artwork.
2nd Stop –
Elk Cove
Vineyard, 27751 NW Olson Road, Gaston area, on the
Sip 47 Wine
Route.
Pat and Joe Campbell founded Elk
Cove Vineyards 40 years ago and remains family-owned
today. Daughter Anna Campbell will lead a vineyard
tour of Elk Cove's Roosevelt Vineyard planted to Pinot
Noir in 1993. A guided wine tasting with
winemaking staff will follow. Lunch with a view
will be enjoyed in Elk Cove's special events room.
3rd Stop –
Ken Wright
Cellars, 120 N Pine Street, Carlton, wine town of the
Yamhill-Carlton appellation.
Ken Wright considers Pinot Noir
to be the preeminent wine grape on the planet.
As founder of Ken Wright Cellars in 1994, he was
instrumental in organizing the six new American
Viticultural Area (AVA)s in the Northern Willamette
Valley. Ken will present an AVA geology lecture and
guide us through a comparative tasting of some of his
vineyard-designate wines. The focus will be on
flavor characteristics brought to wines by parent rock
material beneath various vineyards used by Ken Wright
Cellars.
