      With more than 100 wineries within an hour’s drive, the Tri-Cities of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland is certainly a good choice for a home base to explore many parts of the Columbia Valley's wine country.  Fully contained within this large Washington appellation are eight sub appellations – the Yakima Valley, Rattlesnake Hills, Snipes Mountain, Naches Heights, Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope and Walla Walla Valley AVA (American Viticultural Areas). 

       It is easy to understand why Columbia Valley wineries produce high-end, premium wines since the Tri-Cities area lies on the same latitude as the world-famous Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of France.  The region’s dry climate combines with the Columbia Valley’s rich volcanic soil, and hot summer days followed by crisp, cool evenings which create optimal conditions for growing premium wine grapes. The area sees more than 300 days of sunshine annually and is actually a desert region, receiving less than an average of seven inches of rainfall a year.
