Washington Wineries & Wine Regions
Puget Sound Wine Region and
Seattle Area Wineries
Wine Country, Wines and
Wine Shops
The Puget Sound
wine region is currently Washington's only
official American Viticultural Area (AVA) on the west
side of the Cascade Mountain Range. It was recognized as an AVA
(or appellation) in 1995. Only about 1% of the state's wine grapes are grown in
this region, which includes the islands and mainland adjoining the waters
of Puget Sound and extends east into the Cascade foothills.
While many Washington wineries are
represented in the
Puget Sound wine region, only a few of them actually use locally grown grapes
to make wine. To taste the
distinct flavors of the Puget Sound AVA, be sure to visit some of these
wineries. Most
wineries with tasting rooms in this western-most appellation of
Washington State use grapes grown in the warmer, drier wine regions
to the east in the semi-arid climates beyond the Cascade Mountain
range. In fact, approximately 99% of
Washington State's
wine grapes are grown in the appellations of the Columbia,
Yakima, and Walla Walla valleys, the Columbia Gorge, Red
Mountain, Rattlesnake Hills,
Wahluke Slope,
Horse Heaven Hills and
the Ancient
Lakes of the Columbia Valley - all
located on the east side of the Cascade Mountain range. Other successful
growing areas of the Columbia Basin - located in
central and
north-central Washington - have not yet been authorized as
official AVAs.
TIP: If
you're making a plan to visit wine country any time soon, be
sure to get The Priority Wine Pass
first. Enjoy a full year VIP membership
and the huge savings you'll make
on tasting fees and wine purchases at hundreds of
participating wineries throughout Washington, Oregon and
California. Your membership will likely pay for itself the first
day you use it, thanks to the complimentary or 2-for-1 tastings
and other special
deals you'll find at participating premium wineries.
WinesNorthwest users receive
a $20 discount on a $59.99 membership fee. |
Over more recent years,
dozens of wineries from Central and Eastern
Washington have opened tasting rooms in the Greater Seattle Area,
especially in Woodinville and
a few in Leavenworth
for the purpose of locating retail operations closer to primary
areas of population and tourism centers. A few other wineries own and operate production facilities in
central Washington, but have located their tasting
rooms as well as their corporate offices near the I-5 corridor of the Puget Sound region.
The
northern edge of the Olympic Peninsula
(about two hours west of Seattle) is home to another cluster of wineries,
and in between are a few wineries located on various San Juan
Islands. Car and passenger ferries are part of memorable
wine-country experiences in this part of Washington State.
Yet another
batch of wineries has emerged in the northern portion of Puget Sound
appellation. Scattered near the I-5 corridor in
Whatcom
County, a dozen wineries offer the last Washington wine-tasting
opportunities before crossing the border into British Columbia,
Canada.
When you visit wineries in the Puget Sound
area,
be sure to make time to enjoy the flavors and
characteristics of wines made with grapes grown in this region's
cool-climate terroir; take time to visit a few of the
wineries offering Puget Sound-grown
wines. Watch for locally grown varietals
such as Pinot noir, Madeleine Angevine, Siegerrebe and Chasselas.
These varieties thrive in the lush Puget Sound wine region, just as
they do in the similar climate of the Loire Valley in France.
The
more adaptable Pinot gris grape is grown in both temperate Puget Sound
vineyards and in a few of the more arid and warmer vineyards of central and eastern
Washington. The climatic differences are significant, resulting in
Pinot gris wines of distinctly different flavors and bouquets,
depending on the region of their origin.
The rain shadows of the Olympic Mountains
to the west of the Sound create attractive micro climates for growing vinifera
grape varieties. Annual rainfall in these areas can be as low as
17 inches per year, compared with 60 inches or more in other areas of
Western Washington. Long
periods of freezing temperatures are rare in the Puget Sound basin.
The Sound's large body of water moderates temperature extremes, making
possible not only viticulture, but fruit growing as well.
Fruit-wine aficionados will find no lack of delicious choices.

Wine Touring
in the Puget Sound Wine Region
Seattle Area Woodinville
Greater
Puget Sound Area
Wines
Northwest organizes wine-touring information for the Puget Sound
wine region into four sections
-- the Greater
Puget Sound Area, the Seattle Area,
the Woodinville Area
and the Whatcom County area
in the north.
You can find wines from the
wineries of this region at many nearby
Seattle-area wine
shops and other Puget Sound-area
wine shops as well.
Greater Puget Sound Area
Wineries, Wine Country and Wines |
Wineries scattered
throughout the popular and beautiful Puget Sound Region give
wine-country travelers an opportunity to combine wine tasting
with an awe-inspiring variety of site-seeing and recreational
activities. Famed for their array of beautiful vacation
spots, Northwest Washington's Olympic Peninsula and Puget Sound
islands are home to many
wineries.
Only a relatively small
number, however, produce any estate-grown wines. |
Island
hopping by ferry is a great way to visit any of the picturesque wineries
on the Puget Sound area islands. As you can see from our Puget
Sound Wineries Map, even staying on the
I-5 corridor
puts you in close proximity a several wineries south and north of Seattle.
If you are in a rush, consider stopping at one of the many
local wine shops
or wine bars where local wines are
poured and sold.
