Leavenworth, Washington...
A Wine Trail for all Seasons
|
Since
when are wine and Leavenworth, Washington mentioned in the same sentence?
Since the number of wine-related Leavenworth businesses grew to include
tasting rooms for wineries
(representing several different
Washington
State appellations), and three retail
wine shops (with tasting rooms), and
since the number of nearby operating wineries
recently rose to eight. Eight more wineries are within an hour's
drive.
If you know, or have heard of, Leavenworth, you
probably associate this small village with all-things-German, with
winter recreation, summer theater and music, and most of all, with the
strong
Bavarian theme that influences its appearance, its atmosphere, its dining
opportunities, and its festivals.
The Leavenworth Valley is tucked deep into the
Cascade Mountains, setting the perfect alpine atmosphere for the town's
theme. Well-known for its year-round attraction of tourists,
Leavenworth insures local businesses plenty of retail traffic during any
season.
This little Bavarian village
no longer appeals
only to travelers looking to attend one of its many festivals
throughout the year; many other activities serve as magnets year round for those seeking:
performing arts,
winter sports,
birding
opportunities,
fishing and hunting, out of
the way
golf courses,
mountain bike trails,
or
health spas.
Certainly, the German and Bavarian
dining and
shopping opportunities
appeal to many travelers, but the popular Leavenworth community has reached a
critical mass
of wineries and tasting rooms
that is propelling
Leavenworth to the status of a Washington
State
wine-country destination.
You won't need your car to sample and purchase
wine from nine Washington wineries with tasting rooms on or near
Leavenworth's Front Street; they are
located in the heart of "The Village." A stroll along a charming
walkway, adjacent to Bavarian-styled storefronts, offers access to shops
with tasting bars for Silver Lake Winery (Woodinville & Yakima Valley),
Glen Fiona (Walla Walla), Kestrel Vintners (Yakima Valley), Windfall
Winery (Puget Sound), Willow Crest (Yakima Valley), Pasek Cellars (Puget
Sound), Icicle Ridge (near Leavenworth), Maison de Padgett Winery (Yakima
Valley), and
Okanogan Estate & Vineyards (Oroville in near Washington's border
with Canada) inside the Gold Digger Cellars tasting room.. Three additional wine shops offer tastings and sales
of an even wider selection of wines.

Leavenworth-area
Wineries
Within a 15-minute drive, you will
find eight operating wineries and a regional
tasting room and wine shop. If you decide to venture out of
Leavenworth in a car to visit some of these wineries, be sure to take a
camera. Each route on this Leavenworth wine trail is one to
remember... each replete with "Kodak moments." Consider the
drive to Icicle Ridge Winery near Peshastin; the short distance between
Leavenworth and North Road, heading toward Peshastin, includes spectacular
glimpses of alpine mountain peaks, the river, orchards and vineyards, and
leads to the magnificent log home that is the winery's tasting room.
Follow Chumstick Creek Road in a northeasterly direction and enjoy the
roadside creek of the same name, until you reach Eagle Creek Road, a short
distance from downtown
Leavenworth. Eagle Creek branches off of Chumstick Creek and soon
leads you to the bucolic setting of the tiny Eagle Creek Winery and
Cottage, adjacent to the winery's estate vineyards. More Kodak
moments!
Still another spectacularly beautiful drive up Icicle Canyon
to
Boudreaux Cellars at
Eightmile Creek takes you to heart of the Canyon deep in the
Cascades where, in keeping with the agrarian traditions of the Taliaferro
and Newsom families of Louisiana,
wines are produced in small lots of
hand-crafted, ultra-premium wines. Wines are made in
honor and celebration of
Boudreaux, that infamous Cajun-folklore character known for his brilliant
sense of humor and his pursuit of high adventure. Be sure to call or
email ahead for a tasting appointment.
There are some wonderful
festivals and special events in the Leavenworth area, so if you plan to
visit, be sure to check the town's Calendar of Events, and if your visit
coincides with an event,
make your lodging reservations well ahead.
