Southwest Washington Wine Country
Tour Guides & Driving Services
Wine Shops & Regional Tasting Rooms
The Southwest Washington area, from Tenino to the
Oregon border along the I-5 corridor, is home to almost 40 wineries and
four regional tasting rooms. The regional tasting room represent
wineries and vineyards based in regions east of the
Cascades.
A handful of boutique wineries from Walla Walla and Eastern
Washington offer their wines through a co-op tasting room in downtown
Vancouver, WA, where Cellar 55 pours for: Basel Cellars,
Five Star Cellars and VanArnam Vineyards. Maryhill, Amavi and Airfield
wineries have opened satellite tasting rooms at Vancouver's Waterfront
on the banks of the Columbia River.
Currently, SW Washington wineries are clustered loosely in two areas
along the I-5 interstate corridor:
A relatively new riverside
development -
The
Waterfront - Vancouver, Washington - is fast becoming a terrific
Washington-wines tasting spot, offering upscale tasting rooms for
Maryhill, Amavi and Airfield.
In Clark County alone (per reporter, Viki Eierdam in a June 2019 Oregon
Wine Press article) "more than 20 different varieties of wine grapes
grow, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer,
Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Meunier, Madeleine Angevine, Pinot Gris, Pinot
Blanc, Semillon and even Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Several vineyard
owners are also experimenting with early-ripening hybrids, such as
Maréchal Foch and Léon Millot; while others are banking on obscure
varieties, like Golubok and Zweigeltrebe."
|
Today, within this southwestern stretch of the state, many wineries source their wine grapes from Oregon's
Willamette Valley to the south - grapes such as Pinot Noir - and from
vineyards in Eastern Washington planted to Bordeaux or Rhone varietals.
Some wineries and vineyards in Southwest Washington have planted estate vineyards
- between 130 - 150 acres (as of June 2019), using Pinot Noir and other cool-climate grapes like those grown
across the Columbia River in the neighboring Willamette Valley AVA to the
south.
Visitors will be
pleased to known the Southwest Washington wine country follows
the primary route of the railroad between Seattle, WA, and
Portland, OR, and the area is rich with the history of early settlements, and
even the history of early winemaking dating back
to Fort Vancouver days in the 19th century. |
